Warning Signs You May Need Therapy

5 Signs You May Need Therapy

Here in this space that I call my blog; we are no strangers to the mental health conversation. If you’re reading this, chances are you or someone you know has dealt with depression in their lifetime. The question I’m considering today is, how do you know when it’s time to seek professional help?

Signs and Symptoms

Often times the signs of depression can be so subtle that we don’t realize we’re going through a depressive episode. Depression can trigger physical symptoms that can be attributed to other ailments. Below are some warning signs to pay attention to.

You can’t seem to shake your “blues”.

Feeling sad every now and then is just a common part of life. Jobs, family, finances, school etc. are enough to make many of us feel blue from time to time. The cause for concern is when you experience pervasive sadness inexplicably multiple days out of the week for more than two weeks. Or there is an unexplained feeling of hopelessness, or morbidity that seems to consume you. If you’re feeling that way, it’s time to pick up your phone and dial a doctor.

Lack of interest in activities you normally enjoy.

A key sign you need to seek professional help is when you have no interest in activities that you normally enjoy. This can include your hobbies, or things you once did with your mate or children. If you find yourself wanting to be isolated from family and friends; this is a glaring warning sign that seeing a psychologist could be beneficial to you.

Sleeping habits have changed.

Whether you find yourself excessively sleeping or experiencing chronic insomnia; sleep can be a tell tale sign that you’re experiencing anxiety and depression.

You are fixated on a problem but can’t find the solution.

We’ve all experienced challenging obstacles in our lives that have stumped us from time to time. However, if you find yourself obsessively revisiting the same issue repetitively and it begins to consume you to the point of anxiety; it’s time to give the ol’ psych a call.

You have an overwhelming desire to be helped.

Sometimes the tell-tale sign we need professional help is when we FEEL like we need professional help. If you feel so overwhelmed you are compelled to look to another person for answers; it’s safe to say that scheduling an appointment with a therapist really wouldn’t hurt you.

Navigating depression can be a scary thing, especially when it is uncharted and unfamiliar territory. It’s important to remember that you are not alone, and not having the answers is perfectly okay. Seeking professional help is nothing to be ashamed of and could end up being the best decision you ever make.

  1. I’m 30 & this is my first time in therapy but it’s helped so much already, having someone non-judgemental to talk to. To tell things I’ve been holding in forever. I lucked out with a great therapist for my first. I think it helps that she’s around my age.
